Is the Grass Greener for Caregivers and CNAs Outside of Home Care Recruitment?

A big part of our mission at myCNAjobs is to invest in attracting more potential candidates to the caregiving profession; growing the overall market from which to recruit Caregivers and CNAs. An important part of this is to figure out where people enter the industry from. Our data shows 37% of new Caregivers enter the industry from a job in retail or fast food. There are a couple of interesting things to pull from this data. First, we can see people considering caregiving from a variety of fields. This is a great reminder of how important it is to think outside your current market, which we explored in our recent blog post; "Caregiver Recruitment - Could Your Market be Bigger Than You Think? What can you do to highlight the benefits of working in home care versus some of these other industries?

Often times these workers coming from retail and fast food tend to be higher turnover employees. Although it's great that we're drawing people in from these categories, the challenge is this whole concept of 'is the grass greener." They get into the business thinking it's a better path, but often learn they may not have the heart for it, or it's easier to get the hours or income they want from other industries. How can we better prepare these new Caregiver hires for what lies ahead of them?

Second, think about what this means from a retention standpoint. The same way you likely have applicants coming to your open positions from retail and fast food, your Caregivers may be checking out those industries as well. Are you currently considering other types of positions that may attract Caregivers when shopping your competitors? Truly great Caregivers aren’t in it soley for the money, but they are human. If another industry offers them a better path, they just might try it out.

When it comes to recruiting CNAs it’s important that every channel is firing on all cylinders. If you’re looking for a way to get more hires, not just resumes, check out how we’ve helped another agency innovate hereIf you’re struggling with hiring Caregivers, CNAs, home health aides looking to work for an agency like yours, we'd love to have a conversation about how we can help with Caregiver recruitment.
