Home Care Recruitment: 30% of Caregivers Now Search For Jobs While At Work

Jan 8, 2018 4:26:40 PM

2018 is here and the year of competition for home care recruitment is upon us. Home care agencies across the country are re-examining their employment offering to attract more candidates and hire Caregivers and CNAs more effectively. The latest research on job search for Caregivers highlights the necessity for a revamped employment package. Did you know 30% of Caregivers search for jobs while at work? Let’s break down this stat into the two usual departments: Caregiver recruitment and Caregiver retention.

First, recruitment. In a market where there’s more positions to fill than Caregivers and CNAs to fill them, agencies are inevitably going to end up doing roster swaps on a regular basis. Whether this is through a Caregiver who works with multiple agencies to get their desired number of hours, or by a CNA leaving their current employer for greener pastures, it’s a reality of the industry in its current state. From a recruiting standpoint, this can work to your benefit. Home care agencies who sit atop their local market as a premier destination for Caregivers will undoubtedly gain the attention of those 30% searching while at work for a direct competitor. This leads to a greater flow of new candidates and increases your reputation amongst Caregivers and CNAs as a top destination to work. Agencies with unappealing offerings or below average pay will find themselves with a harder time recruiting Caregivers than ever before.

Next, retention. In every conversation about recruiting in home care, retention is always a relevant other side of the coin. The good news is healthier recruitment usually correlates with healthier retention. If you’ve revamped your benefits to be competitive in your market (see: Recruiting Caregivers: #1 Strategy to Learn What Your Competitors are Offering), those 30% of Caregivers searching for jobs while at work for your agency will understand they’re already working for a top employer. In all likelihood, agencies who have the best offerings will have less of their current staff exploring other options on the job.
